During the coronavirus disruptions, the Senior Bus Services in both towns have been suspended.
Instead, we are offering free rides through Gogo Grandparent. If you already have a Gogo Grandparent account,
use code "SOMA Seniors" for a free ride for shopping, doctor's appointments and other essential trips. If you do not have an account, you can set one up through their website at www.gogograndparent.com or by calling (855) 464-6872.
If you need help, call (973) 558-0863 and a ride will be arranged for you.
This offer is for South Orange and Maplewood residents age 60+ for travel originating or ending in either town.
Town Senior Bus Service
Each town offers free transportation for seniors on week days.
The South Orange Senior Jitney Bus operates 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, to stores and stops within the Village. It also includes transportation to out-of-town shopping areas on several days each month. If your destination is not on a regularly scheduled route, advance reservation is required by contacting the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs at (973) 378-7754, ext. 2.

The Maplewood Senior Bus runs several trips to shopping destinations during the week (Shoprite, Bed bath & Beyond, Home Depot) as well as “Dial-a-Ride” for door-to-door service within Maplewood. You can schedule a ride one day in advance by calling the Maplewood Community Center at 973-763-5287. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Maplewood's Dial-a-Ride service will take riders to South Orange Village upon request.
In addition, all South Orange and Maplewood residents can ride the commuter jitneys as they make the morning and evening routes for the regular rate of $2 per ride. Commuter jitneys follow designated routes to and from the train stations, from approximately 6:00am - 9:00am and 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Essex County Services
For residents 60+, Essex County provides free, handicap accessible transportation for people with Medicare to all towns within the county. Call (973) 618-1280 to register and set up an appointment. Once you are in the system, you can begin scheduling rides. Service is from 8am – 3 pm. The service needs at least 2 days’ notice, but can set up rides up to 14 days in advance.

Gold Crown Taxi offers Classic Card Holders a 25% discount on all rides. To book a taxi or get a quote, call (973) 821-5701 and state that you have a Classic Card.
On Demand Car Service is a growing trend for transportation, such as Uber or Lyft. These require smart phones and can be set up as individual accounts. If you do not have a smart phone, two senior-friendly options are available that will act as the intermediary in finding you a pre-screened driver to take you where ever you need to go:
