Take advantage of a free opportunity to reduce your risk of some health problems. The South Orange Health Department will hold its 11th Annual Free Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South Orange Fire House, located at 56 Sloan Street. No-cost health screenings and informational tables will include: Eye screening, hearing screening, Himalayan bowls (relaxation, pain relief, and stress reduction), blood donations, Fire Department & smoke alarms, spinal screening, face painting for children, balloons for children, osteoporosis screening, stroke risk assessment includes (blood pressure, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL , triglycerides, and LDL screening (capillary), respiratory screening, hepatitis B screening (venous blood test & follow-up), child identification kit (dental x-ray, photograph, finger print, and write-up), lead screening for children (capillary), pediatric dental screening, Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and facial skin screening, If you have any questions you can contact the Health Department at 973-378-7715 ext. 7710. Early Street Community Garden: A Model of Sustainable Landscape What is a sustainable landscape design? Carolle Huber, vice president and cofounder of Grow It Green Morristown, will cover it all—from native plantings to green streets and more—and will show how these practices were implemented at the Early Street Community Garden in Morristown. The Early Street Community Garden now provides space for more than 100 families to grow their own food, along with so much more. Find out how this littered and vacant space was turned into a showcase for sustainable practices in less than four years. Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker St., and start at 7:30 pm. Volunteers needed to help the Trap Neuter Vaccinate and Release (TNVR) Feral Cat Program in Maplewood. On Sept. 9, 1-3pm, People for Animals will be meeting with the Maplewood Health Department and other TNVR volunteers to plan, update and regroup the feral cat TNVR project. Volunteers and resources are needed to make this program a success. This is the third year of a three year pilot program for TNVR. The Essex County Senior Wellness Day is open to all seniors residing in Essex County. Health screenings, information about nutrition and exercise demonstrations will be available. Various Essex County agencies, such as the Division of Senior Services, will have representatives on site to share information about available programs for which seniors are eligible. Area hospitals, senior day care facilities, local nursing homes and other social service providers will also be participating in the fair.
